DIY or Pro Cleaning?

Hey guys! Curious to hear opinions on DIY carpet and upholstery cleaning versus hiring someone. I’ve got a rented steam cleaner before, but it didn’t feel like it made a real dent in the grime. Any honest comparisons out there?
