Structuring Visual Explanations in Science

Hi all, I’m writing a review paper and want to include visual explanations for some processes, but I’m not sure how to structure them properly. My current diagrams feel random rather than guiding the reader through the logic. How do you organize visual explanations effectively?

A visual explanation works best when it mirrors the intellectual journey you want the reader to take. Instead of presenting every component at once, the diagram should reveal the process step by step. That’s one reason scientific images and animations have become more common in modern publications—they allow complex processes to unfold visually instead of appearing as a dense schematic. While preparing a similar review article, I found inspiration in the portfolio of Ella Maru Studio https://scientific-illustrations.com , where their work often illustrates processes through carefully staged sequences. The viewer moves through the explanation almost instinctively. Structuring visuals that way transforms a diagram into a learning tool rather than just a figure. If you’re aiming for that level of clarity, it could be useful to study their approach or even reach out to them directly.
